The “False Beliefs” Cow
• Since my dad was an alcoholic, I guess I’ll be heading in that direction, too.
• I don’t want to make a lot of money because wealth just corrupts you.
• Since I never went to school, I’ll probably never amount to anything.
• I would never think about starting a business. I can’t imagine the headache my boss must endure on a daily basis.
Again, these tend to be very dangerous cows for one simple reason: False beliefs are untrue statements that for some reason we’ve accepted as truths.
Soon after the blockbuster success of his movie Rocky, Sylvester Stallone was asked in an interview about a specific scene in the movie. In this particular scene, Rocky says, “My old man, who was never the sharpest, told me I weren’t born with much brain so I better use my body.”
Stallone, who wrote the script, confessed that this was something he constantly heard from his father. He heard it early and often, and eventually started believing it himself. This false belief prevented him from seeing his true potential. His life began to change when he stopped believing in those words and instead started to believe in himself.
Interestingly enough, this line is followed by a response by his future wife, Adrian, who says, “My mother told me just the opposite. She said, ‘You weren’t born with much of a body, so you’d better develop your brain.’”
Believing in yourself is nothing more than being able to recognize your own strengths and talents, claim them, accept them, and begin to use them.
False beliefs can condemn us to mediocre lives if we allow them to go unchallenged. The liberating effect of getting rid of this type of cow is enough to open your eyes to a world of new and unexpected opportunities.
